How to start a walking group in your neighbourhood
Residents across Paris districts are launching neighbourhood walking groups to combine daily movement with local connections.
How we reported this

Paris residents in the 11th arrondissement launched three new walking groups last month, each meeting twice weekly along fixed routes that start at Place de la République and end near Canal Saint-Martin.
Interest in group walks has grown this year as more people seek low-cost ways to stay active amid stable but high housing costs and steady demand for community activities. Universal healthcare covers basic check-ups, yet many residents want preventive habits that fit around work and family schedules without gym fees.
Choose a route and set a schedule
Pick a flat, well-lit path that stays under five kilometres for the first month. The Seine riverbanks from Pont Neuf to Pont d’Austerlitz offer benches every 200 metres and public toilets at regular intervals. Bois de Boulogne’s perimeter path near Porte Dauphine provides shade and water fountains. Both locations connect directly to Métro lines, so participants can join without cars.
Fix meeting times on the same two weekdays. Groups that started in April 2025 report average attendance of 12 people per session when the start time stays between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. or 6:30 and 7:00 p.m.
Recruit locally and keep costs low
Post notices at the boulangerie on Rue de Belleville and the library annex on Rue Oberkampf. A simple shared spreadsheet tracks who attends and who leads each week. No membership fee is required; participants cover only their own Métro ticket if needed, which remains 2.10 euros per ride under the current Île-de-France Mobilités tariff.
After six weeks the original 11th arrondissement group added a second loop through Square du Temple. New walkers joined after seeing the same faces on consecutive Tuesday and Thursday mornings. The model requires only a phone number for weather updates and one volunteer to confirm the route each week.
Start with one short test walk this weekend. Confirm the meeting point, note the distance on a phone map, and invite two neighbours. Repeat the same route for four sessions before expanding. Local pharmacies on Rue de la Roquette stock basic first-aid supplies if any participant needs them during the first outings.
